What Is Work?
Work is larger than employment and smaller than everything that takes effort. It includes paid and unpaid activity that produces or maintains goods, services and the conditions of life.
The Vocabulary of Work
These words describe different units and social arrangements of work. Treating them as synonyms produces bad career advice, misleading statistics and confused predictions about AI.
Work Relationships
A work relationship distributes authority, assets, risk, reward and protection. The label on a contract is only the beginning of the explanation.
Work and Identity
Work can become part of who a person is without becoming all of who they are. Occupational and professional identities can persist across jobs and work relationships, while remaining open to conflict, exclusion and change.
What Is a Career?
A career is the changing trajectory of a person’s participation in work, roles, practices and institutions across time.
What Is Career Fit?
Career fit is the changing compatibility between a person and a possible course of work: what it asks, offers, permits and may become.

Foundations · Skills and capability
What Is Capability?
Capability draws on what a person can learn, what they understand, what they can do and the judgement they can sustain when conditions change.
What Is Aptitude?
Aptitude is evidence used to predict how someone may learn or develop performance in a specified domain, not a fixed measure of natural potential.
Credentials and Licences
A credential is an institution speaking about a person, a programme or a permission. Its value depends on what was examined, who had authority to speak and what other people allow the claim to do.
Intelligence and IQ
Intelligence is a contested construct, an intelligence test is an instrument, and IQ is a normed score. Confusing the three turns bounded evidence into a verdict on a person.

What Is Psychometrics?
Psychometrics is the craft of turning selected observations into evidence about qualities we cannot see directly. Its history explains why every score is both a technical achievement and a claim that must earn its meaning.
Reliability
A score can look exact while depending on the questions, occasion, rater and people used to estimate it. Reliability begins by deciding which of those changes the score ought to survive.
Validity
A score does not arrive with its meaning attached. Validity is the disciplined work of asking what claim the score can support, for whom, in which setting and for what use.
Career Assessment
A career assessment can reveal patterns worth exploring. Turning them into a course, job or career choice takes more evidence, and more judgement, than a score alone can supply.
Construct Map
A career profile may place six kinds of evidence side by side. Each answers a different question about a person, and each has limits the others cannot fill.
Assessment Fairness
A test can treat everyone alike and still become an unfair gate. Fairness depends on what it measures, who can show what they know, how the score is used and whether harm can be put right.

Foundations · Demand, technology and AI
Demand for Work
Useful work can be waiting everywhere while paid work is scarce. A need becomes a job only when someone can fund an output and a producer decides to use human labour to provide it.
Technology and Work
A machine rarely meets an occupation whole. It changes an activity, a cost or a constraint; organisations redistribute the work; jobs are rebuilt; and only then does an occupation begin to move.
Five Terms for Technological Change
Five words now carry almost every argument about AI and work. They describe different questions, at different stages, with different evidence.
Generative AI and Cognitive Work
A system can now draft, summarise, translate, classify and code in forms that resemble skilled work. The harder question is what must still happen before generated output becomes trustworthy action.
AI and Entry-Level Work
Junior work has always produced more than output. It gives newcomers cases, correction, relationships and proof that they can carry greater responsibility. AI changes a career when it changes access to that formation.

Act I · Subsistence and specialisation
The First Division of Labour
Long before occupations, people divided the work of survival by age, skill, circumstance and, often, gender. The arrangement was flexible, learned and held together by sharing. It made human life possible before it made hierarchy possible.
The Neolithic Revolution
Farming emerged through many inventions and a long reorganisation of land, time, care and obligation. It made specialised work more continuous, populations more numerous and new forms of inequality possible.

How We Got the Big Five
Personality psychology's most influential map was assembled from ordinary words, statistical choices and two converging research traditions. Its five continuous dimensions offer a useful common language for personality.
What We Work For
People work for income and security, but also for influence, belonging, identity, contribution, autonomy and the chance to become good at something. Motivation begins with those wants and ends with the conditions that let effort matter.
