The short answer
An activity is a course of action. A task is a bounded unit of activity directed towards an outcome. A practice is a socially organised way of doing and learning something. A role is a pattern of expected responsibilities attached to a position or relationship. A job is the package of tasks, duties and continuing responsibilities held by, or designed for, one person. An occupation groups jobs whose main tasks and duties are sufficiently similar. A profession is an institutionalised field of expert work that claims specialised knowledge, standards, jurisdiction and some authority over entry or practice.
These units overlap. A task can appear in many occupations. One job can contain several roles. A practice can cross organisations and endure after a job ends. A profession may contain many occupations, specialities and work relationships. The value of the vocabulary lies in keeping unlike questions apart.
Skill answers a different kind of question: what capability does a person draw on to perform a task or family of tasks? Skill runs across these units. It is applied in tasks, developed through practice, required or combined in jobs and carried, adapted or lost across a career.
The definitions of job and occupation follow the International Labour Organization’s ISCO-08 classification closely. ISCO defines skill minimally as the ability to carry out the tasks and duties of a job. The definitions of activity, task, practice, role and profession are Guidebeam working definitions, informed by role theory, communities-of-practice scholarship and the sociology of professions.

Hospital discharge example: checking a wound is a task; coordinating discharge is a role; the nurse’s job packages both; nursing is the occupation and, where institutionally organised, a profession.
Activity and task describe action. Practice and role describe socially organised ways of doing and contributing. Job packages one person's tasks, duties and responsibilities. Occupation classifies similar jobs. Profession adds an institution around expert work. Skill crosses the map as a capability, while career traces movement through the forms over time.
The map in one example
Consider a hospital nurse coordinating a patient’s discharge.
- Communicating with the patient is an activity.
- Checking medicines against the discharge plan is a task.
- Clinical nursing is a practice, learned through participation, standards, judgement and shared methods.
- Acting as the patient’s educator or care coordinator is a role.
- The particular post held by this person, with its roster, assigned duties and continuing responsibility for safe discharge coordination, is a job.
- Nursing is an occupation, grouping many similar jobs.
- Nursing may also be organised as a profession, with accredited education, registration, ethical standards and authority over aspects of practice.
Several skills cross this example: explaining, checking, coordinating and exercising clinical judgement. Each is used in tasks, developed through practice and portable only to the extent that a new setting recognises and supports it.
No single layer gives a complete account. “Nurse” cannot tell us the exact tasks performed that day, the person’s authority in that hospital, the quality of their practice or the trajectory of their career.
The misconception to avoid
An occupation describes a family of jobs. Personality, identity, worth and destiny belong to the person. Organisations assemble tasks into jobs and can divide, combine or redesign them.
Activity: the broad description of doing
Activity is the loosest term on this page. It describes a course of action without necessarily specifying its smallest steps, the person responsible or the institutional setting. “Writing”, “caring for a child”, “analysing data” and “repairing a roof” can all be activities.
Its breadth is useful in ordinary explanation and dangerous in measurement. Two people may both be “analysing data” while one cleans a spreadsheet, another designs a causal study and a third reviews an automated model for errors. To understand capability or technological change, the activity usually has to be decomposed.
Activity and work have different boundaries. Running can be recreation, professional sport, military training or part of a delivery job. Its purpose and relationship determine when the activity becomes work.
Task: a bounded unit of work
A task is a unit of activity undertaken to produce an identifiable outcome. It may be small or complex: enter an invoice, diagnose a fault, prepare a legal submission, calm an agitated patient, set up a machine or decide whether a loan application requires further review.
Tasks are useful because they reveal what job titles conceal. Two jobs with the same title may allocate tasks differently. Two occupations that seem distant may share tasks such as scheduling, explaining, inspecting or persuading. The knowledge, tools, autonomy and consequences attached to a task can also vary sharply by setting.
Official occupational databases such as O*NET maintain task statements alongside other information about work. A strong task statement normally makes the action and its object visible: not “communication”, but “explain treatment options to patients”; not “use software”, but “compare design alternatives using a simulation tool”.
The unit remains partly chosen by the analyst. “Produce the monthly accounts” can be one task for planning purposes and a bundle of dozens for workflow redesign. There is no universally correct level of granularity. The test is whether the decomposition helps answer the question without stripping away judgement, interaction or context.
Skill: capability across the map
A skill is a capability used to perform a task or related family of tasks. In ISCO’s minimal operational definition, skill is the ability to carry out the tasks and duties of a job. The O*NET Content Model makes the distinction from the other direction: skills sit among information about the worker, while tasks sit among information about the work.
Skill is therefore not one level above a task. A task describes what is to be done; a skill describes part of what a person brings to doing it. One task can require several skills, and one skill can be used across many tasks, jobs and occupations. The required proficiency and the form a skill takes also depend on tools, standards and context.
A career is not one level above skill either. It is the trajectory through tasks, practices, roles, jobs, occupations, relationships and institutions over time. Skills may develop, decay, transfer or be ignored along that trajectory. Practice: how doing, learning and standards persist
Practice is the least reducible item in the sequence. It is a socially organised way of doing and learning something, sustained through methods, standards, tools, judgement, language and participation with others.
Clinical medicine, carpentry, teaching, software engineering, community organising and archival research can be practices. People enter them at different levels, learn what counts as a good performance, use shared artefacts and gradually take on harder or more trusted work. Some practices are formal and credentialled. Others are learned in families, communities or workplaces without a named curriculum.
Etienne Wenger’s communities-of-practice account is one important lineage for connecting practice with participation, learning and identity. Guidebeam uses the term more broadly than any single theory. A practice may be disputed, porous, unequal in access and sustained across several communities.
Practice matters for careers because capability can continue while jobs change. A journalist may move from a newspaper to an investigation unit, a university and an independent project while still developing investigative practice. Deep participation and feedback develop judgement; a title alone cannot.
Role: expected contribution in a relationship
A role is a pattern of responsibilities and behaviour expected from someone occupying a position in a social setting. It is relational: an expectation exists in relation to other people, rules or purposes.
A person may be a supervisor, mentor, safety representative, caregiver, apprentice, team critic or client advocate. Some roles are written into a job description; others emerge informally. The same job holder can move among them during a day. Roles also exist outside jobs, in households, communities and civic life.
Role theory contains several traditions. Bruce Biddle’s review of the field shows their concern with patterned behaviour, social positions and expectations. For this library, the key point is simpler: a role describes both the contribution expected by others and the actions a person performs.
This makes role conflict possible. A manager may be expected to protect staff wellbeing and meet a deadline that encourages overwork. A clinician may be both patient advocate and gatekeeper of scarce resources. The tasks are real, but the conflict sits between roles and their obligations.
Job: one person’s work and responsibilities
The ILO’s International Standard Classification of Occupations defines a job as a set of tasks and duties performed, or meant to be performed, by one person, whether for an employer or in self-employment. This is the right operational unit for occupational classification, but it does not exhaust the organisational meaning of a job.
A job also carries continuing responsibilities: areas, people, resources, standards or results that the holder is expected to take care of. A responsibility persists across many tasks. “Maintain patient safety” or “keep the accounts accurate” cannot be reduced to one action, even though each responsibility is discharged through actions and decisions. In self-employment these responsibilities may be assembled by the worker rather than assigned by an employer.
Responsibility is closely related to, but different from, accountability. Responsibility identifies what the holder is expected to take care of; accountability identifies where someone must explain or answer for decisions and results. A job can give a person operational responsibility while final legal, managerial or professional accountability sits elsewhere. The US Office of Personnel Management, for example, describes a position description in terms of its major duties, responsibilities and supervisory relationships, rather than as an inventory of every daily activity.
This does not make job and role synonyms. A job is the fuller work package held by, or designed for, one person. A role describes a pattern of expectations within a particular relationship or social setting. One job can contain the roles of supervisor, mentor, budget holder and client advocate; the same roles can also appear informally or outside paid employment.
A job therefore has a holder, or is designed for one. It can include tasks from several domains, continuing responsibilities and roles that extend beyond the written description. Its actual content depends on the organisation, tools, customers, regulation, staffing and local bargains about who does what.
Organisations design jobs. A small business may combine payroll, recruitment and office administration in one job. A larger organisation may split them across departments. A school may ask teachers to perform pastoral, administrative and technical work that another system assigns to specialists.
This explains why a title is weak evidence on its own. “Project manager”, “analyst” and “designer” can refer to very different task bundles. Good career information needs the title, but it also needs the tasks, relationships, context and level of responsibility.
Occupation: a category of similar jobs
ISCO defines an occupation as a set of jobs whose main tasks and duties are characterised by a high degree of similarity. Occupation is therefore a classification used by censuses, surveys, education systems and labour-market services to group millions of distinct jobs into analysable families.
An occupation can include employees, contractors, employers and own-account workers. A graphic designer working inside a bank and an independent graphic designer may share an occupation while having different industries and work relationships.
Occupation and industry classify different things. As Jobs and Skills Australia explains, occupation classifies what a person does; industry classifies the primary economic activity of the organisation or unit in which it occurs. An accountant can work in a hospital, mine, charity, university or accounting firm. The occupation may remain accounting while the industries differ.
Occupational categories are useful and revisable abstractions. Classification agencies update them as work changes and as old groupings cease to represent the labour market. The Australian Bureau of Statistics introduced the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia in 2024 to replace ANZSCO for Australian occupation statistics. The revision changed the map used to describe the work.
Profession: knowledge, jurisdiction and institutions
In everyday speech, “profession” may mean any occupation, a respectable white-collar career or a job requiring prolonged education. The sociology of professions treats the term more carefully and less flatteringly.
Andrew Abbott’s The System of Professions examines professions as groups competing for jurisdiction over expert problems and work. Eliot Freidson describes professionalism as a way specialised workers can exercise control over the content and standards of their work, distinct from pure market competition or managerial bureaucracy.
From these traditions, Guidebeam uses a family of features. A profession commonly has:
- a body of specialised knowledge and practice;
- organised education or training;
- standards of competence and conduct;
- institutions that represent or regulate practitioners;
- a claim to authority over a domain of problems;
- some control over entry, titles or permitted practice;
- an account of service, responsibility or public interest.
These features vary. Some are protected by law; others are asserted by associations. Professional closure can protect the public from dangerous practice, preserve practitioner autonomy or restrict opportunity and competition. Often it does more than one at once.
Profession describes an institutional arrangement around work. Highly expert work can occur outside a profession, and professional status alone cannot guarantee capable or autonomous practice.
How the layers relate
The terms can be placed in a rough chain:
- People undertake activities.
- Activities can be described as bounded tasks.
- Tasks are learned and judged within practices.
- People take roles that organise expected contributions.
- An organisation or business combines tasks, duties and continuing responsibilities into a job for one person; a self-employed worker may assemble that package themselves.
- Statistical systems group sufficiently similar jobs into an occupation.
- Some fields organise expert work through the institutions of a profession.
Skills cut across the chain. They are exercised in tasks, developed and judged within practices, combined in jobs and described at occupational level. A professional body can reshape tasks; a technology can alter jobs; a new practice can cut across established occupations; people can renegotiate roles without changing titles.
Most importantly, a career is the trajectory through these boxes and relationships over time, not a higher rung in the hierarchy. A person may keep a practice while changing occupation, remain in an occupation while moving between work relationships, or hold several roles and jobs at once.
Why the distinctions matter for assessment
Assessment frequently crosses levels without saying so. A personality questionnaire describes patterns in a person’s reported tendencies. An ability test samples performance under specified conditions. A task analysis describes work. An occupation profile aggregates across jobs. None can substitute automatically for another.
Suppose a system says that someone “matches marketing”. Does it mean they may enjoy certain activities, have performed relevant tasks, identify with a creative practice, prefer a client-facing role, fit one particular job design or resemble people grouped in a marketing occupation? Each is a different claim requiring different evidence.
The O*NET Content Model makes the separation visible by placing worker characteristics and requirements alongside, but not inside, occupational requirements and occupation-specific information. Information about a person and information about work can be compared, but they never become the same object.
Why the distinctions matter for AI
Predictions about automation often move too quickly from a technical demonstration to the disappearance of a profession. The missing levels are tasks, job design and institutions.
Technologies usually reach work through tasks. A system may draft a routine message, classify an image or generate a first-pass analysis. Whether this changes a job depends on how often the task occurs, what other tasks surround it, whether the output needs checking, who carries liability and whether the organisation redesigns the workflow. Whether it changes an occupation depends on how widely those choices spread across many jobs.
The task approach in labour economics, including David Autor, Frank Levy and Richard Murnane’s analysis of computerisation, helped show why technologies substitute for some human activities while complementing others. The ILO’s 2025 generative-AI exposure index likewise treats occupations as task bundles and concludes that transformation is generally a more plausible immediate effect than complete automation.
Tasks alone give an incomplete account. A technically automatable output may remain embedded in a professional practice involving accountability, tacit judgement, trust and learning. Alternatively, an organisation may use the technology to strip judgement from a role or shift checking work to someone with less power.
Some jobs are organised around entrusted judgement. A judge or magistrate performs many tasks and draws on many capabilities: hearing argument, evaluating evidence, interpreting law, managing procedure and writing reasons. Yet the office’s defining responsibility is not any one of these tasks. It is to reach an independent, authoritative decision under law and to own the reasons for it. The High Court of Australia explains that each Justice makes their own decision and ordinarily prepares reasons; the Federal Court of Australia describes public reasons and appellate scrutiny as central forms of judicial accountability.
An AI system might search authorities, summarise submissions or draft part of a judgment. Successful performance of those tasks would not by itself make the system a judge. The institutional questions remain: who is authorised to decide, whose reasoning becomes the court’s reasoning, who must act independently and impartially, and who can be called to account? In judgement-centred work, the output, the responsible office-holder and the legitimacy of the decision cannot be treated as interchangeable. Four questions hidden inside an unclear claim
Vague descriptions of work usually blur one of four things:
- What is the unit? An action, bounded task, expected role, one person’s job, an occupational category or an institution of professional practice?
- At what level is the evidence? Observation of one person, a workplace study, an occupational database or a population survey?
- What is being inferred? Actual task performance, expected responsibility, capability, identity, legal status or future demand?
- What crosses levels? Does evidence about one task justify a claim about a whole job? Does an average occupation profile describe this job? Does a title describe this person?
Many confident statements fail at the fourth question.
The larger point
Work is organised through nested and overlapping abstractions. We need them because no census can list every job and no career conversation can inventory every gesture. We also need to remember what the abstractions leave out.
A job title compresses tasks and responsibilities. An occupation compresses jobs. A profession adds institutions and claims of authority. Skills describe capabilities that cross those arrangements. A career connects participation across time. Confusing those relationships makes people appear interchangeable with classifications and makes classifications appear more stable than the work they describe.

Notes on the evidence
Job and occupation are based on official ISCO-08 definitions, whose authority is limited to operational classification. The definitions of role, practice and profession draw from bodies of scholarship with internal disagreements; Guidebeam’s concise formulations are editorial syntheses designed to keep their main distinctions visible.
